Here, There, & Everywhere

Ella Delyanis
Group Landscape Show

July 30 through August 29, 1998

Ella Delyanis has spent over thirty years developing her very personal approach to landscape. She strives in her art to capture the natural beauty of her Worcester county surroundings intact, with all the immediacy and freshness of actually being there. Although echoes of the French Barbizon painters and the American Luminists are evident in her work, her artistic sense is entirely her own. On confronting Delyanis' pastels for the first time, one is immediately struck by her extreme attention to detail, which lends her landscapes a remarkable tactile quality. Alternating passages of soft and hard focus gives her work a lyrical, almost fantasy like quality. She plays the melancholy of a dark pool against the exuberance of a clear blue sky, or lines a tranquil hillside path with undulating sprays of weeds and grasses. One senses in the work of Delyanis a commitment to and passion for her subject rare in the contemporary landscape.

Moss' fascination with these three figures is rooted in their unlimited curiosity, wonder and defiance of convention. They all ventured into unchanged regions and altered the existing body of world knowledge.

Showing concurrently with Delyanis are five New England artists whose concerns with landscape range from tense, fractured images of old growth forests struggling to survive in the modern environment; to obscure, dreamlike, black and white encaustic paintings on fabric. As the title Here, There & Everywhere indicates, each artist is lending a uniquely different aesthetic and conceptual voice to the show. However, an overall unifying vision amongst the five featured artists is evident in their obviously shared love and contemplation of the natural world, as well as a tendency to realistically and poetically depict its fragile beauty.
