| B. Lynch Knaves vs Fools The Creiger-Dane Gallery will be showing an installation of mixed media figurative sculptures and paintings by artist B. Lynch from February 3 to 27, 1999. An opening reception will be held on Friday, February 5, from 6 PM to 8 PM. The artist will hold a gallery talk about her work on Saturday, February 13, at 2 PM. Gallery hours are 10 am to 5:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment. For the last seven years, B. Lynch has been creating a series of works about Folly, inspired by the sixteenth century manuscript Praise of Folly by Desiderius Erasmus. Using the Goddess Folly as a starting point, Lynch has found numerous ways in which to explore the idea of foolishness, and the tendency of humankind to swing wildly between either of its extremes of order and anarchy. In her current installation, Knaves vs Fools, Lynch stages a duel between these two courts of Folly, Order and Anarchy. Drawing parallels between this eternal battle and a game of chess, the gallery is transformed into a playing field for the various queens, knights, knaves and pawns to duke it out for supremacy. However, life being the complicated game that it is, this duel is not so black and white. Upon close inspection of these pieces, it becomes difficult to say which represent order and which anarchy. We find a maid sweeping up all vestiges of silliness and fun, with brillo pads for hair and garbage bags for a dress; a jester pawn with a precariously attached and bursting cod piece; a bishop with "proper" attire consisting of a polka dotted bow tie and a plug for a tail that connects nowhere, anti-men with hard-hats and muzzles on every organ denying experience of any of the senses. In this Game of Folly, distinguishing one extreme from the other is a moot point. We quickly realize that it is extremes themselves, with their inherent inability to allow for the gradations of human nature and her follies, that are most dangerous. One comes away from Lynch's work with the strong sense that at her best, Folly will give her disciples the courage to do all those life-affirming things that risk-free behavior doesn't allow for. To be human is to be foolish, to be foolish now and again is to live. If you are interested in any of these works, feel free to email geeta@creiger-dane.com.
