Robert Jordan: The Shadowed Cove, at the Creiger Dane Gallery

The Shadowed Cove
1985, Oil on canvas, 28"x40"

Whether painting the landscape of North Carolina, New Mexico or New Hampshire, I've always tried to combine observation and memory, to be true to the thing or place seen while embedding it in some larger context. The challenge is always the one of making a good painting while preserving the strength of the original image against attractive alternatives or distracting details.

I find that my deepest responses and feelings of connection are to those artists of a long and, for me, still valid tradition-from Rembrandt and Goya, Constable and Corot, to Inness, Homer, Eakins and Hopper- artists who have addresses the world outside themselves in all its beauty and mystery.
