Karen Moss
Conversation with History:
Images from the Diaries of Three Voyagers

June 3 through June 27, 1998

This collection of Karen Moss' work is a continuation of her previous show at the Creiger-Dane Gallery in 1996 and draws inspiration, once more, from the diaries of historical figures. Charles Darwin now keeps company with Christopher Columbus and Maria Sibylla, a 17th century German-born artist-naturalist who went to Surinam to document the metamorphosis of insects. Images from their exotic travels are merged with fragments of their diaries and journals. The subjects of their writings range from Darwin's discourse on earthworms in good British soil, to the kindness and generosity of the native people Columbus first encountered upon landing in the New World.

Moss' fascination with these three figures is rooted in their unlimited curiosity, wonder and defiance of convention. They all ventured into unchanged regions and altered the existing body of world knowledge.

The pieces are characterized by their earthy palette and rough surfaces, as well as rich combinations of papers and printing techniques. Unlike the works exhibited previously, Moss will be showing a number of unstretched canvases with burned edges as well as framed collages which integrate photocopy, linoprint and painted gauze fabric.
