Unexpected Occurrence

1998, 32" x 48", Mixed media collage on board.

spacer This diptych was created along with the piece entitled "Kind and Gentle People." Both works focus on the theme of Columbus' first voyage to the New World. The title "Unexpected Occurrence" refers to Columbus' error in thinking that he had at last found the route to India. The nautical imagery of the voyage is integrated with the plant life encountered on the islands, known as the Indies. This collage combines Tibetan handmade paper, handprinted images, photocopy and painting. Although the work is based on a narrative concept, it reads on an abstract level as well as a representational one.
