John Powell Cast Shadows The Creiger-Dane Gallery will be showing the installation work of artist John Powell from April 30 to May 29, 1999. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 30, from 6 pm to 8 pm. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 5:30 pm, or by appointment. The Creiger-Dane Gallery is pleased to present John Powell's latest light installation, Cast Shadows, in conjunction with 1999: Celebrating Boston's Artists and The Boston Cyberarts Festival. Home to several art schools recognized for the excellence of their art-and-technology courses, and boasting the highest concentration of digital artists in the world, Boston today is a mecca for artists interested in technology. John Powell's work begins with light in sculpture. Sources as diverse as the Pantheon, kouros figures of pre-classic Greece and meso-American sun sites all serve as inspiration for his work. John's work is typically monumental, i.e. bridges, plazas and performing arts complexes. The work in Cast Shadows is more intimate. Each piece sets a site by casting an image. There are no secrets here, each sculpture lays bare its bones of contention, revealing the lights, wire and lenses that create the images on the walls of the gallery. Inspired by the play of natural light in space, the work is designed to stand alone and survive. Employing individual and wall hung light works, Powell's exhibit will engage the viewer with interactive light and shadow play. Planned in conjunction with the Cyberarts Festival, Cast Shadows anticipates the new millenium and welcomes the art of the future.
