Steven Trefonides Recent Work September 2 through September 26, 1998 Steven Trefonides has been a veteran of the Boston art scene for well over 40 years. He returns to the Creiger-Dane Gallery for his second show, bringing with him a number of paintings and works on paper in various media that display his talents as both a brilliant technician and thinker. Trefonides' highly charged work deals with the human psyche on cosmic levels. Peopled with ever-mysterious figures arrested in various moments of intimate thought and action, his canvases entice the viewer to take a closer look inside his theatre of characters to find out what all the commotion is about. However, the depth of Trefonides' dense and layered, often dream-like work defies any easy or slick interpretation. While often graceful, colorful and incredibly beautiful, Trefonides' work also reveals a dark underground of murky happenings and shady characters that remain forever ambiguous. As our lives are filled with sorrow and joy, hope and desperation and the ever-anxious expectation of the future, so Trefonides' canvases function as a microcosm of our minds and his. Trefonides was classically trained at the Swain School of New Bedford, the Vesper George School of Art with William Jewell and the Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts from 1950 to 1954. Among his many awards are Tiffany and Fulbright grants, the Grand Prize for Painting at the Portland Art Festival, the St. Botolph Club Artists of the Year Award and the Camargo Foundation fellowship.
