Representing Boston, veteran Ceriger-Dane artist Sheila Gallagher will have a special installation in the back room. We will have an opening reception on Friday, February 4, 6 to 8pm. Gallery hours are Tuesay through Saturday, 10 am to 5:30 pm or by appointment. This exhibition explores the tensions between freedom and formula, abstraction and representation, the unique and the series, influence and originality. What makes a work original, compelling? What causes a curator to select one artist or piece over another? Much of this depends on the selector's background in art, his or her taste and affinities. In contemporary art the material is often untried and unevaluated. There are no sure guidelines or definitive judgements. The selections made for New Work, New York are the result of several trips made to numerous Chelsea and Soho artist studios and galleries. Some of the artists have gallery representation, others don't; some have long resumes and many reviews, others are newer to the scene and have fewer credits. All have something original, unexpected and novel to say. The work is in many media, from inflatable sculpture and motorized photography, to installation and mixed media wall reliefs. Several artists work in the traditional media of black and white drawings, another does indelible marker drawings on mylar sheets six feet high. A whimsical surrealism pervades the paintings of Paul Minotto and the wall reliefs of Gary Jacobson. Gerhard Mayer uses pens and drawing stencils following defined rules to create a series of abstract fantasy drawings in which no two are alike. Turtle House by Charlotta Westergren presents a stainless steel and plexiglass environment with naturalistic elements. No works of this type have been seen in the Boston area. Most of the names will not be familiar to Boston residents although they are known to New Yorkers. This exhibition gives viewers a unique sampling of the creative ferment of New York artists, their verve and skill. The Creiger-Dane Gallery is happy to save you a trip to New York to come see art hot off the easel, drawing board, camera, air pump, candy store.
