We will have a reception with the artists on Friday, January 7, 6 - 8 pm. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. - 5:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment. As we enter upon the new century, we are compelled to ponder what the future holds for us. In art, we can look at the work of Dorothy Simpson Krause, Karen Schminke and Bonny Lhotka to get a glimpse of the possibilities. Using new digital print technology, these three artists have broken new ground in the quest to push the limits of two-dimensional reality. Employing the lenticular lens, the appearance of three-dimensional depth and movement is added to an otherwise two-dimensional image. Combining traditional artistic sensibilities and skills with modern tools, they have created work that displays a dynamic balance between the old and new. By scanning photographs, studio debris and various images into the computer, the artists create digital collages with physical layers of visual meaning. Dorothy Simpson Krause's interests lie in the universal, historical and timeless. Contrasting images of ancient civilizations, varied symbols and modern science reveal subtle meditations upon the human condition and how it has evolved. Karen Schminke composes landscapes consisting of woven images of trees, clouds, leaves and other natural elements. With the addition of depth and movement in these prints, the resulting work serves as a potent vehicle for contemplating our surroundings in the 3-D via the artist's vision. Bonny Lhotka's work reflects most strongly on the notions of time and its passing. Central images of clocks, watches and other time-telling devices are animated as the viewer passes by. The work in this exhibit is a window into what art in the 21st century may be able to accomplish. By pushing the boundaries that define what is two and three-dimensional, the artists have created work that challenges the viewer to redefine notions of time, space and movement; while still allowing us to experience the very personal concerns that each of them holds.
