"Photo Collages" Charles Giuliano The Creiger-Dane Gallery will be showing the work of Charles Giuliano from December through January. This work was initiated as the result of travel and photography, in London and Paris, in 1989. In addition to conventional images, I started to shoot an entire roll of first, black and white, and later, color print film, for the purpose of assembling panoramas. Over the past decade, the work has progressively evolved both technically, as well as, in terms of ever more inventive imagery. Some aspect of the work is still travel related, resulting in panorama views of landscape, and architecture, in Italy, France, Spain, China, Canada, New York and Boston. Even from the beginning, I shot multiple views of classical sculpture in the British Museum and Louvre, and incorporated this material into landscapes and seascapes. While in Paris, in March, 2000, I began to experiment with seemingly random acquisition of individual images of graffiti, food, street signs, and architectural detail. Initially, I had no specific idea of how this material might be incorporated into the work. Last summer, I began to locate an appropriated sculpture of Marilyn Monroe, into some of the Parisian material. This involved relocating the sculpture from the earlier landscapes into an entirely urban and popular cultural related setting. This proved to be a liberating process that led to other possibilities and a new way of seeking out interesting material. This changed how I shot material in Montreal, which is work in progress, and has stimulated plans for how to shoot London in a trip that is planned for March, 2001. Also, over the past year, I have begun to create multiple viewed portraits of family and friends. From Classican Greek and Roman sculpture, as a source of inspiration, I have begun to look to Ancient Egyptian, and medieval, painting and sculpture dealing with themes of death and memory. This has represented a powerful and poignant series full of poetic references to the most important issues of life, and our essential, fragile, humanity. Most importantly, the work has evolved from the work itself. Now that there is a significant body of images available, I hope to begin to create limited editions and experiments in how to further publish and exhibit the work.
