Self Portraits: Where I'm Calling From Grant Drumheller The Creiger-Dane Gallery will be showing the self portraits of Grant Drumheller from June 30 to July 31, 1999. An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 9, from 6 pm to 8 pm. Gallery hours are 10 am to 5:30 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment. Grant Drumheller's most recent series of works form a core set of reactions to the death of his mother. Although Drumheller has always been a figurative painter, he has in the past used invented imagery to a greater extent than observation. Feeling the need to convey very specific emotions in his self-portraits, the artist has had to re-engage himself with the skills required to achieve an extra sense of realism. Combining a new balance of observational and invented imagery, the artist has succeeded in creating a beautiful fusion of intention and method. Many of Drumheller's paintings include props and articles of clothing that were given to him by his mother. These various objects a dress, gold lace scarf, an Indian Sari, jewelry were curious parts of his mother's possessions that seemed at once insignificant and at the same time imbued with the spirit of his mother. By placing himself in relation to these articles in different contexts, the artist pays homage to the emotions surrounding his attempts not only to deal with his mother's death, but also understand who she was in life. In addition to the emotional and narrative content of Drumheller's portraits, these paintings as a group are also an occasion to examine painterly surfaces. Plays of light and texture act as metaphor to the complexity of a mother-son relationship.
