What is Art? : Karen Davis The Creiger-Dane Gallery restroom will be exhibiting the black and white photographs of Karen Davis from September 1 to December 30, 1999. A reception will be held on Friday, September 17, from 6 to 8 pm. Gallery and restroom hours are 10 am to 5:30 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment. Flush from the excitement of her first restroom exhibition last year, photographer Karen Davis returns this year with a big question for a diminutive gallery space. She has lined the walls of this unusual venue with twenty-five images that invite the viewer to join her in considering "What is Art?" This installation of black and white photographs muses on museums, galleries and the street. From the sidewalks of Manhattan to the D'Orsay in France, from a gallery in Oxford, Mississippi to the Museum of Modern Art, it is hard to not be amused and provoked by the sly references inherent in these images. A show with genuine off-beat charm, Davis offers some unexpected answers to the question she poses. Known for her environmental portraits, cityscapes and "collections" that explore the overlooked artifacts of urban life, Davis has exhibited extensively in the Boston area. Recent exhibitions include: For Patrons Only, Creiger-Dane Gallery; Boat Building Returns to Boston, Deferrari Hall, Boston Public Library; Intersections, Gallery 57, Cambridge Arts Council; Parallels and Crosswalks, University Place Gallery, Cambridge Art Association.
