Living|Arts The Boston Globe * Thursday, December 16, 1999 by Cate McQuaid Globe Correspondent Susan Rothenberg And Marino Marini: Metaphor And Meaning: Prints At: Creiger-Dane Gallery, 36 Newbury Street through December 31, 1999. Susan Rothenberg, whose paintings are on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, has prints showing at the Creiger-Dane Gallery, along with those of the late Italian sculptor Marino Marini It's a provocative pairing Manni's carnival of dancers taming the beast within comes across with a pollyanna tone when confronted with Rothenberg's bold, nervy meditations on pain. Rothenberg's woodcut "Red Bamboo" is Bet on a green grid patterned with wood grain. A sharp red stalk of bamboo leans up the right side of the print. At the top, a man shuts his eyes and thrusts his hands out; black ink vibrates around him. H;B anguish rivets the eye; he seems at once contained and explosive. "Blue Violin," another woodcut, is separated into four colored quadrants humming with hatches. A black leg tickled with white lines drops from haunch to heel down the middle of the print. Black hands dance in two corners, and a black violin floats with a bow across its strings in the lower, blue quadrant. Even this seemingly benign subject matter reads like the music of the devil - sharp, bursting with line. Manni's work lightens the load. His aquatint "Marino From Shakespeare II" sets an acrobat on a horse's back in lush, watery colors. The lines of the acrobat echo those of the horse; negative space flows positively among the solid forms. It's fine work, but Marini can't match Rothenberg's hard edge.
