Goya Metamorphoses: Recent Paintings by Ric Haynes The Creiger-Dane Gallery will be showing the figurative, surrealist paintings of Ric Haynes from September 29 to October 30. We will have a reception for the artist on Friday, October 1, 6 to 8pm. Gallery hours are 10 am to 5:30 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, or by appointment. Confronting a painting of Ric Haynes for the first time is not dissimilar to waking from a vivid dream. The immediate sense of confusion, the hazy searching of one's conscious and subconscious mind, a desperate attempt to locate the distinction between reality and dream and the eventual awakening to the tangible world, are all integral to experiencing the artist's work. Haynes most recent paintings derive from his interest in the Spanish master Goya. Like all Haynes' work, the current series is an intensely powerful, sometimes shocking vision, best, although not perfectly described as surreal. Most characteristic of Goya and Haynes, however, and perhaps most strongly articulated in this series than in any previous, is Haynes' ability to confront the issues that haunt him in an ironic light that somehow purges the narrative of its malignancy. Haynes' habit of loading his canvas with highly detailed and extremely modeled images, coupled with his intensely saturated, almost apocalyptic sense of color; all serve to visually demand that the viewer confront the images before them. One is unable to casually look at a painting of Ric Haynes and move on, but is instead compelled to develop a story. Drawing from sources as varied as the history of Western painting, Christian and pre-Christian Paganism and Classical mythology, Haynes uses this history simply as a point of reference from which to push, pull and twist his own narratives. All manner of outside influences from current events and personal experience weave their way into his paintings to create a tableau of a very personal mythology, but one that nonetheless is open for the viewer to explore and create their own story.
